4.)  Information items presented:

           

a.)    Offering Geology 1305 Online -  Tabled

b.)    Bouncing ACC Email to Other Servers – Chris Cavalli handed out instructions on how to bounce ACC emails to other servers.  There was a short discussion on the item.

c.)    Standards of Conduct for Hourly Lab Assistants – It was agreed that Lab Coordinators and Lab Tech’s would meet and develop a generic set of Standards of Conduct for hourly lab assistants. 

d.)   SEO Update - Tabled

e.)    IYOA – Jim Heath informed everyone at the meeting that there would be another Astronomy talk at CYP on November 13, 2009 at 7:00pm in room 1102.  The topic would be “Kepler and Galileo.”  Everyone was reminded the last talk at CYP would be on December 4, 2009 and the topic would be “ET Life.”  He also mentioned that he would re-do all talks in spring 2010 at RVS and in the fall 2010 semester the talks would be at the Round Rock campus. 

f.)     Assessment Reminder – Everyone was reminded about the Assessment.   It was also mentioned that there would be work sessions during the breakout at our December meeting at CYP to work on the Assessment.

g.)    Summer eStaffing – Everyone was reminded that summer eStaffing was coming up.  Paul Williams showed everyone where to find the eStaffing schedule online.

h.)    The Three Click Law -   The Three Click Law consist on students clicking three times online to get to the instructors CV, syllabi and student evaluation.  This information will have to be in place online by fall 2010.

Minutes of GEOL/ESTE Subcommittee

Assessment

It is time to enter things into ULEAD (actually past time), so Ron brought up the issue of what assessment should be conducted this year in geology and env. science.  There was a consensus decision that the previous assessment ought to be continued, but new ones developed for next year. 

 

Geology SLOs

There was a review of the geology SLO matrix and the topics taught in geology courses.  The ones for GEOL 1404 were revised and a few others consolidated.

 

Minutes of PHYS/AST/ENG Subcommittee

November 6, 2009

                                    Make up Policy for Students not Being Able to come on Fridays for Open Lab

                                    Everyone shared their concerns and suggestions on the makeup policy for students not being able to come on Fridays for open lab.  It was agreed that an email notice would be sent out to everyone to be more flexible with students making up labs.

 

                                     Standards Committee Update

                                    The Standard Committee presented their report on the departmental final exam policy, language of the exam standards and instructors guidelines.  There was a lengthy discussion on the item.  It was agreed to table the final exam issue.  Everyone agreed that once Jeff Bechtold rewrote the language of the exam standards, that it would be combined with the instructor guidelines and posted only in the faculty handbook.   

 

                                    PHYS 1401 Hybrid  

                                    Paul Williams mentioned to everyone that he has applied to be on sabbatical leave next year and one of his projects was working on a PHYS 1401 Hybrid course. (A lecture component course online and lab course and testing in person) He wanted to know if everyone was interested and also to get their approval to making such an offering prior to beginning the work. There was a short discussion and everyone agreed to offering such a course.

                                                 

                                    Voluntary Mechanical Engineering Transfer  

                                    Everyone was informed about a new program of study called the Voluntary Mechanical Engineering Transfer Compactor.  This program of study is a two year program that will guarantee students’ acceptance in any signatory college’s Mechanical Engineering Program as long as the student completes the program and maintains a certain GPA.  There was a discussion on the item and everyone showed interest in the program.  Next step would be for ACC to become a signatory college.

 

                                    Conceptual Physics Workshop                                                                                                There will be a Conceptual Physcis workshop on December 5, 2009 at NRG from 10:00am to Noon. 

 

                                    Sonograhy considering change to PHYS 1401

                                    The Sonograhy department is considering changing its prerequisite from PHYS 1405 and PHYS 1407 to PHYS 1401. 

 

                                    Physics Instructional Program Review

                                    It was announced that the IPR needs to be done this year instead of next year.  A committee was formed to work on the IPR.  The committee consists of  Chris Cavalli, Chair, Paul Williams, Jeff Bechtold, James Friedrichsen, Jim Heath, Hadi Parhikhteh, Karl Trappe and Elliott Richmond.

                                    Hosting Physics Olympiad

                                    The US Physics Olympiad which is a worldwide high school Physics competition is looking for Community Colleges to act as host sites for  preliminary exams and recruit students to compete.  James offered to look into it.
